Switches in Eldrinor

There are four switches in West Wing of Eldrinor. I brute-forced it (up-down-down-up), but I'm curious. Is there a hint that I've missed that tells me this combo, or we are supposed to try random combinations until one opens the doors?

It's just random. Little known fact, my father was an artist for Duke Nukem 3D, and when I was little, I was playing around with the Build engine the game was made with, and figured out how they did their random switch combinations to unlock a door. This was quite a triumph for seven year old Evelyn, and I've been using that dumb puzzle ever since. hehe
