As for stat point distribution, I've actually seen a lot of different builds. I like to go ATK/AGI/INT on Lita, with modest points put in DEF and MAG. I build Adrian like a tank; DEF/ATK. Seri Kesu is straight INT/MAG with a bit in AGI/DEF. And Doren I basically do everything but ATK evenly.
ATK increases normal attacks, and the power of some skills (you'll see ATK+, INT++, etc, the + indicates how much the ability scales with that stat). INT increases ability damage and magic defense. DEF increases physical defense and increases health by a bit. MAG is your Mp (resource used to use abilities) and AGI is how often you'll be able to act in battle relatively to other actors (so someone with 100 AGI can act twice as many times as someone with 50 AGI).
Hope that helped!
