im pretty sure people play dbd because it has constant updates and dlcs. Like what a REAL game should be doing.
Yea because adding legion and changing a couple of perks is such a big improvement for dbd. And dbd is filled with game breaking bugs and glitches, like the basement locker bug that you can use as survivor to get on top of buildings and roofs making you completely unreachable and invincible, the animation bug for survivors that causes them to slide making them completely unpredictable, the vaulting bug where it plays the vaulting animation but doesn't actually move the survivor over the vault, and many many more. The only thing they did to really "balance" dbd in the latest patch was making medium vaults faster for some ♥♥♥♥ing reason, like looping isn't already bad enough.
Personally i'd rather hug a cactus than play DBD for hours on end on either side (killers are unbalanced af and make you want to tear your hair out at high ranks unless you play Billy or Nurse but that's boring as ♥♥♥♥ and Survivor gameplay is just ResidentSleeper in general, wooo fixing gens and looping around chunks of ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ wood all game, riveting i know. Not mentioning that DBD's community is full of retarded pre-pubescent apes that will harass you at every given opportunity as the game is a toxic cesspool/wasteland) but that's just me.
It's many things really but i say it's because of DBDs content and casual/braindead gameplay. Kids often struggle to keep up in games that require skill. F13, even Last Year is far superior in that regard.
TL;DR?: Autism, that's floating around a lot in today's gaming industry. *cough* Fortnite *cough* battle royale metas *cough*
To answer your question no one thing killed the game. it died from a million paper cuts. The lawsuit was just a coup de gras that would prevent anything from improving drastically in the player count.
