You can have fun playing this without watching the movies but you would have a lot more fun if you watched them before you play.

Knowing what happens in the movies would help you to understand the backstory of the movie overall. Largely you can understand the story of the movie itself though I think it'd allow for a larger appreciation if you watch the movies.
