Lore-wise there was some neat things though, and visually it looked good (if not fantastic).
I'd say play the (1st) game first (specifically 4-5 mission ranks), and if you want to see more give it a look.
The anime does present some of the post-apocalyptic themes in a detailed and gritty light. Also some of the characterization was well, some even better than the game (*cough*Eric*cough*). Also the action scenes are nice, albeit the art style may turn some off.
Overall though, the games will leave you with a conclusive "plot/story".
Resurrection is coming on PC which is Burst + more story.
