Everything is depend on your skill and how good you use them
I didn't ask for "best weapons" but good starting weapons that I can use. I know Short Sword Paige is recommended for highest pierce. And theres a scythe that can inflict venom though I don't know what weapon tree it is.
So intead of saying the most common thing i hear when someone asks for a recommendation. Don't just say something that is often said by the majority. Instead give some recommendations and explain why. Otherwise your just not helping.
Stop asking this type of question
You do realise stats do matter in this game? While skill does play a part from not getting hit to blocking you do need a good weapon that does decent dmg especially endgame stuff. Elementals dmg also plays a huge part in doing dmg to the Aragami in this game.
But keep in mind that every Aragami has specific weaknesses so be sure craft gears with different attack types and attributes.
But if I were to choose for you, It's good to go with Long Blade, Tower Shield, then whatever gun you prefer. Long Blade is good for those who prefer close combat like me. You can chain your attacks with Zero Stance and use your gun with Impulse Edge while in Blade Form. Tower Shield is good for blocking all kinds of attacks without sustaining damage. It is slow to deploy but with a lvl10 Guard Speed you can deploy it a lot faster.
That's just my suggestion, but you can completely ignore it:)
However I have always stuck with short blades since PSP version of the game came out. And recently started to get into variant scythes since they have such godly range for a melee weapon. Their BAs are also interesting like Soul Devourer which absorbs a lot of Oracle Points which is pretty good in conjuction with blaster weapons where you can store a lot of OP.
1. Buster Blade > Defensive BA . Not really crowd friendly
2. Charge Spear > Glide, but weak against specific aragami with all armor type
3. Long Blade > Okayish, havent used it yet
4. Scythe > Have a good Crowd control, but not really damage cannot be comapred to other 3
5. Short sword > Havent tried yet , The most agile compared other melee
6. Hammer > Kinda like buster but harder than buster
I dont really care about this "99999" dmg thing, if you really to enjoy the game just pick anything you like.
P99 is nothing than a challange.
Theres no specific achievement that said you need clear P99 solo,
Almost like gun melee have specific weakness.
I am using Scythe which kinda good on land enemy but not really high dmg unless i use execution BA which need time to cast compared Charge Spear/Long Blade/Buster,
For gun mine is assault, spam 2 win by raising quick evoke rate and aim the weak including crowd control.
I have a bad habit of getting the best of the best. Even in monster hunter. Though in MH it was easier. Its another way to enjoy the game. As for me getting at least one of the best weapons in any kind of game and calling it my own is a type of achievement and pride. Might be weird but how do you think those people with real life antique swords and guns feel?
Getting one of the best weapon is quite easy in GE2RB since you can abuse the Blood Rage, or 1 hit kill/99999 dmg with hidden attack/specific BA.
I also used to have that habit getting the best but later i realise its only for self achievement, otherwise it might not be worth your time.
Also i picked Scythe because it looks cool and assault because its the easiest way to grind without having specific skill other than Trigger Happy and Frugal.

Yeah scythe does look cool but after looking at some of the BAs they have some unique affects to them besides just doing dmg.. Like Oracle absorb. More elemental dmg. and probably some others.
Again, raw skill
Dude if you want to play that way thats fine. Doesn't mean everyone has to play that way.
2) Hammer: Stronger Crush than Buster, needs more player skill to wield easily, has mobile BA, has best endless BA attack for Crush types, has strongest air Crush BA, best stun to weak mobs, best for single target
3) Scythe: Slash attack, Mainstream weapon, good crowd control, op gain, can hit multiple parts, weak damage, good for Blastgun users.
4) Short Sword: Fastest piercing weapon, dodge and hit'n'run build, best and basic for Blastgun users (for OP gain).
5) Spear: High Piercing damage with longer reach, has BA good for extremly long aircombo, good for Shotgun users, Charge attack build is good too.
6) Longsword: Very Basic but Very Good when you max out BAs, Stronger Slash attack than Scythe, has variants with Crush and or Pierce, has longrange air BA attack (good for breaking hard to reach parts weak to Slash and OP gain), Impulse Edge *wink wink*
Its basically like having P99 mode with Rank 1 item + Noral mode.
no love for assault?
oh right.. having assault felt like not not having a melee as long the burst status is up
