Your choice
Assault gets more benefit during early game where you can spam bullet infinitely even without frugal and trigger happy.
Both get more powerful with Blood Rage abuse, but in term of DPS, blast will still win later on, though Assault still very viable. Choose what you prefer most and what seems more fun to you.
You can murderstomp the Crimson Orochi with Meteor bullets and 700% blood rage in less than a minute thanks to jashinsamael... XD
Blast guns are great as well, but to obtain everything you need, if you're strictly looking for the skills for the gun itself, takes a while, since you will have to play with it to have a chance of getting a really high skill for it.
You can also always just put skills on a different piece of equipment that you use all the time, but that makes your kit have less variety, so it's not normally recommended if you have the proper skills for the Blast gun.
You can do the same with a short blade and an assault gun at that much blood rage. Really, at 700% blood rage if the thing is still standing by the end of it, you're not doing enough damage.
Nope. They're very much a one and done cannon unless you're in blood rage.
Technically they end up more a three and done after frugal and trigger happy, but you really are using it to do as much damage as humanly possible per trigger pull. Properly built, you can pretty much max out blood rage's damage requirement in one salvo, then use the infinite ammo to pile on the murder.
Assault is far FAR better for racking up evoke rate, doing sustained damage outside of blood rage, and pairs best with melee weapons that love blood rage, like Short Blade, which has Infernal Vortex, which is pretty much "Destroy target aragami. Kill self" with how much damage it deals to yourself and your victim.
Blast is vastly better with weapons that are dominant outside of blood rage, such as busters.
Here's a playthrough that features maining both assault and blast to the end of the game. It's still incomplete, but well... you get the idea
