Need credits to play multiplayer?????

Do I understand this correctly in that you need credits (micro transactions) in order to play in online games? Is this correct.....

No, only the special game mode Arena, that re-launches every week with a different setup costs those micro transactions to join after the first, free round and you get one free round every week.

Matches against random players, or against selected friends are free to play over the internet, after you have bought at least the basic game, a.k.a. core-deck. Currently there are 14 additional card packs/decks, that can be bought and all of those can be mixed and played in the same manner, bearing in mind that you need at least one of the independent decks in the mix (Core-deck, Colony Wars, or Frontiers).

Back when I got the game (forever ago), it was free to play vs. AI and a one-time purchase of $5 to unlock online multi-player. I don't know if it has changed since then, but was well worth the $5 investment. Sure, you can pay money to add expansions, but the base game is solid enough for unlimited play, I sure haven't grown tired of it. The weekly Arena lets you see what the expansions are about, you get one free entry and can pay 20 credits to get extra entries. Each entry lets you play until you win 6 or lose 2 games. You can rack up credits along the way, too. I have over 200 credits and have not paid more than that initial $5 investment.
