Cheating does exist, unfortunately, but from an outside perspective it is hard to tell when a player complains about opponents cheating, whether their opponents got lucky, played a little better, or actually cheated.
If you want to be a better player I can link you to articles on how to do so. However, I don't know of any way to help you against cheating or even how to prove a certain player is cheating or not.
Edit: for reference, for the app 1000 top players have on average a 60% win to loss ratio across all of their games, meaning they lose about 2 out of 5 of their games, which is fairly notable/unusual for a game.
We can't fix issues that we can't find, so unless someone comes with something actionable, you can assume any past issues have been fixed. We have hundreds of thousands of users. If there was wide-spread cheating - I'd like to think we'd be seeing some sort of proof at some point.
