GoNNER

World 2 is ridiculous
Dont get me wrong, I like this game, it really looks amazing. But right now Gonner is very close to become on of the few games I stopped playing at due to insane difficulty and thus constant frustration.

I completed world 1 in like an hour. Right now 5 more hours passed but I still can not beat lvl 2. even if get to the final boss untouched I still can not kill him, I dont even understand the proper strategy against him. Pretty sure there is a way to beat him easily, but finding that way takes a lot of trial and error and every time you die and have no glyphs you should start from the beginning which is very frustrating.

Seriously, making bosses that hard in a game with no reliable checkpoints and perma death is pure BS. Super meat boy is a hard game, but you have checkpoints after each level, it would be a terrible game without em. Binding of Isaak has perma death, but levels and especially bosses are much easier and forgiving than in Gonner. I would really like to love this game but when you are forced to replay the first two levels over and over again with no progress at all the fun ends pretty quickly.

You can actually run from the world 2 boss. Just keep going down and eventually you'll find a world snake. But if you want to kill it, try the lightning gun or the scythe.

It's a skill based rogue-like, just keep at it and you'll get better :gonheart:

Edit: oops, I'm thinking of the world 3 boss. For the world 2 boss, you can hide under him to avoid getting shot by the turrets. If you want to kill the turrets then use the lightning gun or the jump backpack.

My tips: forget the combos, go slow, get to the exit, learn to lead the flying ones, cheese the turrets. For the boss: lightning gun for the turrets on the ceiling, or laser hits all hitpoints on the boss. You can run under the boss, but look out for not to sit on you. You can also climb on its side and jump on the hitpoints on top. Dodging the turret shots is not easy, but if you stay calm and stand still, you should be able to avoid them. The 3rd world has much harder turret hell so practice.

I'd agree, it only took me around 3 hours to beat the game, however. BUT, if you want an easy win, just get the scythe. That thing is insane.

I have to agree with you, scythe plus shark fin is the easiest way to beat the game and both items are easy to find. I wish i'd knew it earlier :D

As for me, I got a copy of the game on GOG quite some time ago... I feel in love in it in a second! After getting the hang of it, I slowly progressed and got to World 2.

It all felt apart.

I have never seen such a horrible level design/enemies as they are in World 2. It's just horrid and unplayable for me. After 3 hours of playing the game, I just gave up. I did once get to World 2 boss, but only because I speed ran thru World 2 levels, not getting any single "upgrade points" or whatever they are. Which is NOT fun, and it's not how you play the game. So it really didn't made any sense to play like that.

This game could be one of my favourites, awesome control and feel for the charatcer, awesome weapons and upgrades, even the keyboard controls are more than fine for me (I don't see why everyone has issues with CTRL for shooting?! Maybe it's just me and lots of experience with old school shooters which used CTRL for shooting as well), but the horrible World 2 is what made me delete the game and forget about it. I came back to it to check out if it's any different, but it's all the same.

I get that the game is hard and skill based, and I like games like this. But World 2 in this game is HOW NOT TO DESIGN LEVELS and ENEMIES. It's only my opinion, but it's the reason why this game is IMO bad, when it could be one of the best. I don't even wanna know how later levels look like. Back to NT.

I'd say, give it another try! I fell in love with this game while grabbing me the Lightning Gun. Haven't found the Scythe yet, but may come (more) in handy.....Anyway, having fun with it, making a lot of combos (even Combo Infinity isn't that hard), easily progressing until Death World. I just hate that Glyph Cap...
Btw: I didn't know you could change the Hud until now; it has been quite in the way for me.

Playing via a keyboard as well (ZXC + Arrows), can't complain at all!

i don't own this (yet?thinking about getting it while its on sale...) but i just want to ask, based on everyone's advice "get the lightning gun".
just making a generalized statement here, but if a game is impossibly difficult with any other item/upgrade except for one specific item/upgrade and if you get that one specific item/upgrade, then it becomes impossibly easy, then isn't that bad design?

If that was true, then yeah, that would be bad design. But it's not true, soooo.... :rickweeks:

Is world 2 the one with the robots? This is a hard game.. Not sure if I an devote much more of my time to a game that has such a punishing level design. Also can't help but feel the hit boxes are off sometimes, which doubles the frustration. Off to not git gud.

Yes, Robot World_2
Game design isn't punishing at all in my opinion. Just grab/try the Brick Head (don't lose gear & head anymore) and try the Laser Gun maybe. Also: there's this 'ghost friend' that can drag a gun as well, but I never figured out the exact rules to it. It seemed that, as soon as I started to make big combos, he could drag a gun way more often.
1 more thing people might be missing = something I missed as well: Ikk can stretch when you press the up arrow, resulting in a higher jump = especially helpful during the World 2 boss fight for ex. ;-)

Thanks for the pointers dude. Having a look at your profile, I think you may just be a tad better at games than me! :D One thing I just realised which makes the game easier, is that if you jump up into a wall it immediately makes you face the other way, ie away from the wall.

This makes is much easier to slide down and shoot.

No problem! Thanks for the words, but maybe I'm just a go-getter who accepts challenges with love :)

Good point there! It's especially helpful in Shooty World + when you fire the laser (or other ammo....), you'll get more stuck to the wall :laughingprism: Don't even worry about Shooty World's boss -- not gonna spoil.

Well, after 9.2 hours I finally beat World 2... I even tried to push the robot off the edge to get the achievement, but I somehow got swallowed to the next level..

Didn't last long in Shooty World, then I thought - I won't see you again for another 10 hours or so...

Ahaha, then maybe you should have gone left ;-) It'll suck you in easily otherwise...
But nice!

Hmmm, maybe try to 'skydive' first -- with enough glyphs -- to see what you can expect and to maybe progress easily that way as well. It's mostly those enemy thingamajigs, that shoot in all directions, you have to watch out for, but other than that, you can fall down to the finish easily....I tried it a couple of time while I wasn't aiming for combos :)

I never saw the boss as a very hard enemy, but which dumbass decided to put instant death pits in the game? If we wanted to have that kind of ♥♥♥♥ we'd play with the poop head or something. Roguelikes should never have obstacles that make you die instantly if you didn't want such a 'challenge.'
