It boggles my mind
Why after two narrative heavy JRPGs they made the third mainline entry a pure dungeon crawler. It started off so well with the prologue but i'm now in chapter 1 and already feel like this entry is pointless and i'm wasting my time instead of playing Zero.

Sky 3rd has a lot of info dumps and some fantastic story lines behind some of the doors. It's definitely not a waste of time. I actually prefer it over Sky FC personally after having completed it.

I dunno, i don't get why it's a mainline entry. It's more or less spin off all-stars title from what i can see from vids. Just dungeon running with the entire cast of the first two games. After the end scenes from SC it just seems like such a waste of Kevin and what could have been done as a game while playing as one of the Gralsritter. Sure it may have info dumps, but no world to travel, no towns to explore, etc, just nothing but maze running. That's a complete and utter waste of my time.

A lot of the plot dump star doors are fairly removeable fluff, and a couple very much overstayed their welcome. A handful are actually SUPER important to setting up Zero and Steel, as well as a lot of the forces behind FC/SC.

And as for a waste of Kevin...well, Kevin goes places, and you'll know when it happens.

It may be important to setting stuff up in a vacuum but if i have to run mazes for 70 hours then it's not worth it.

It has the best gameplay and a really solid main story ON TOP of the doors. Heck, the main story alone further builds certain characters. Also, this is not the only game in the series to take this route as Hajimari no Kiseki is pretty much this with the Crossbell and Cold Steel cast. Meaning, we will most likely get a few more games like this in the future.

Well then i'll just remove Reverie from my wishlist and consider the series done at CSIV.
I don't see how it has the best gameplay, you may love maze running for 50+ hours with hour long cutscenes for opening doors but to me that is atrocious gameplay and game design. It's not even an RPG at that point.

Only the odd-numbered chapters are "maze-like". The even-numbered ones are structured differently, which feels at least a little more interesting.

If you don't feel like playing any more, here's a Let's Play you can read[lparchive.org] which will give you the story highlights.

I mean it's over 50 hours of nothing but square, rectangle, staircase, square rectangle, staircase, over and over and over and over. I mean imagine if you had to play 50+ hours of Pinnacle Station for ME2 to make any sense... Western devs are rightly criticised when they try to pull bs similar to this but Japanese are always praised and given a pass, it really boils my piss.

How do you know it's 50+ hours (or even 70 that you mentioned) if you haven't completed it? For the record, I completed the entirely trilogy in about 120 hours combined, 3rd was about 38 hours for me to 100% it.

Seems to me you've judged a book by it's cover and made judgement on the game before starting it and wanted to see if the community shares that judgement and they don't. If you don't like it, we're obviously not going to change your mind, but you're also not going to change the minds of those who did actually give it the chance to shine.

Most of us enthralled in the story that have completed it, generally seem to praise it and put it up there with the best of the franchise. If you don't like it, that's perfectly fine. Not every game is going to please every player, but I'd hope you'd at least have given it a decent chance.

It's very much a mainline title and not a spin-off. It has important info that sets up future installments and fills in gaps that the two previous games didn't. Falcom thought it needed to be made because there was a lot of content they failed to include in the first two games that they felt players would need or that they felt they needed to tell. There isn't much else that can be said that hasn't already been said by others in much better words than I. At the end of the day Sky 3rd is one of my favorite games in the franchise.

FC took me around 60 or 70 hours, SC took me over 100, walkthroughs i looked up on youtube are about as long as the one i was using for parts of SC. Also googling has people saying 50-70 hours.

"Given it a chance"
It's purely a dungeon crawler, every level is the same but with different enemies and cutscenes. It's all combat, there's no exploring Liberl, no interacting with townsfolk, etc. It's just a worse Ys. You know what turnbased dungeon crawling is like? It's like being made to wear the biggest baggiest clothing ever created and then made to run down a narrow corridor with hooks all over the walls. It's nothing like the first two games and i want to play Trails, not turnbased worse version of Ys. That i'm forced to playthrough this or watch hours of footage just so Zero makes sense is horrible design.

To you it may be one of the best in the series but to me it's a travesty.

*Edit*
Go through door Julias day off filler episode begins... Man this game is soo good, easily one of the best in the series how could it not be with brilliant totally not trash tier anime filler content like this...

Yeah, I'm a little put off too. What's getting me is how many really long cutscenes I keep running into. I've been on the same cutscene for over an hour now (Tita's first one). And the game just kinda forced me into it. I have to get to bed. Can't they put segments in where I can save the game? I really hope the whole game isn't like this. It makes me feel nervous that I can't turn this thing off when I need to because I'll have to go through a monster cutscene again. I really loved the first two. Why switch gears like this?
Stabbey Jan 23, 2023 @ 5:09am
Tita's first door is probably one of the longest, and it's definitely the longest one without any chance for the user to take control (and more importantly, save). It was a very bad choice to put that one first.

Yeah. it's definitely an archaic design choice, but I pushed through at the cost of a good night rest!

If you thought that was long, just wait till Kloe's school days door.
