if you went through what she did im sure you'll turn out just fine...
I haven't played FF7 for like a decade (cuz I didn't enjoy it) but IIRC, he was basically some no name soldier who didn't cut it for being in the special forces he dreamed of being except he lost all his memories at some point and pretended to be part of those same forces when he 'woke up' again and magically got the skills neccesary to qualify (not officially but he became some op badass in reality for no reason or whatever) and I never really understood what made him so special other than maybe 'he fell in the lifestream'? So like... why doesn't everyone jump in there intentionally to become gods?
seriously i t's been years, maybe my argument is stupid but I recall when playing it it didn't seem to be much more than a hollow 'lost memory as a plot development excuse, started nobody to be 'relateable', became 'demigod' to be badass, what an amazing guy... nope, thought he was stupid.
What really sucks is he became something of a template. At least with Renne her excuse is she's just a naturally talanted freak of sorts with a perfect storm of history that gets explained.
But maybe we are trying to find sense where there is none. We're talking about a scenario with dragons, flying ships, flying cities, where people are shot, burned and frozen, eat and sandwich and are good to go so whatever.
Anyway, great game. I was expecting a game not as good as the first ones and I was really impressed. The story is actually good and pretty crazy.
I didn't like Kevin that much before this game but I got to like him as a character. He's much more complex than you think when you first get to know him. Still hate how he looks, especially that hair!
I like Joshua but I think the game would be better without the romance between him and Estelle. I know they're not blood related but I still find it awkward that two people who are in a romantic relationship call the same man "dad".
I haven't finished 3rd yet, or have seen her star door yet (I can't wait), but uhh... I anticipate she was just plain smart all along, and the content shown for her door showed that she was damaged and kinda psychotic for a reason, but didn't make her any smarter. But then afterward ororoburs 'rescued' her, and capitalized on her capabilities to make her a combat expert for their own goals, which is why she iddn't 'just kill the people who abused her'...
I'm assuming she never learned combat techniques until after oroborus rescued her from her abusers though. maybe I am incorrect about something...
When do I see her door btw, I really want it. I recently did Kloe's special stone monocrhome school thing in chapter 6.
And TBH, their relationship is only really "awkward" for people who either don't know anything about Trails, or aren't really paying attention. They've only known each other for what, five years by the time of FC's opening? There are only incestuous overtones if you intentionally project them.
So because theres no real way for him to improve his skillset and capabilities as a bracer, his development arc ends up being "I'm not a real boy boohoo, I can't have feelings" and it's just all this stupid angst I don't really have patience for. Maybe if I were 16 again I'd feel something for him because it appeals to that age bracket- he's got three different girls dribbling over him non-stop, he's a super badass who can solve basically every problem, but he's complicated guys, he's got this dark mysterious burden that he alone must bear... because he's so selfless. And perfect.
Y'know why Kevin is awesome? Because it doesn't feel like he's playing into a closeted teenage boy's power fantasy. Yeah, he's OP as ♥♥♥♥, and has a close relation to a couple of cute ladies, but he's also completely openly a flirt, and actually thinks he's a piece of ♥♥♥♥, intentionally manipulating his friends and all that backstory spoiler stuff I won't go into. Kevin walks his path of self-hatred and destruction because he thinks he's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ awful human being, whereas Joshua does it because he's the nicest guy in Zemuria.
As for Renne though, yeah she's annoying and I'm not really a fan, but she doesn't infuriate me half as much as Joshua does. I haven't opened all the doors yet so I'm missing out obviously, but honestly the whole Renne arc so far hasn't sold me one bit on her as a character.
For the record though I do actually like most of the characters in this game.
I agree. Tita and Agate is much worse! Instead of this strange relationship they could have developed more the friendship between Agate an Zin. The game hints sometimes that they became kind of drinking buddies. There is one point in the 3rd where you can see them sitting on the staris in the garden. They must have really interesting coversations. They could have developed Zin's realtionship with anybody, besides Kilika and Walter. Looks like he's just the old timer who's there to help when things get rough.
