But yeah, the trick on all of them is use fish to catch bigger fish, and pray RNG is on your side.
Plate of Excellence (a to-go food) for the Second one.
Fisherman Emblem; +50 Str, +1 Range, -3 Move, Estelle only. for the final one.
Guess it's up to you if you think it's worth it or not. I thought it was a funny story with a funny outcome though.
Final one I used Marine Star + shrimplets to catch bass, which I then used to catch marlins. Lost first try, won second.
I did this pretty easily by using the best bait I had available and then checking if the fish I caught could be used as bait. If it could I used it on the next turn. If not I use the next best available bait again. Repeat this process.
Also to always get a hit, as soon as the ... bubble shows up around Estelle's head start pressing the button. You kind of want to vary the cadence with which you press it. Like three quick presses, wait a half sec, 2 quick presses, wait a half sec and just kind of very that pattern. That way your very likely to be hitting the button right as the exclamation point shows up. You'll never get a bite if you press the button in a consistent pattern but if you use a varied pattern you can trick the game to give you a bite even though you're cheating the system kind of.
Just press the Xbox, PS, or Steam button in the center, and Controller Configuration will be on the left side of the Steam Menu.
If you are in a menu with an image of a controller you're in the right place.
Assuming you're using a gamepad, go into the steam controller configuration menu, set the button that you're supposed to catch fish with to turbo by setting an activator. Select the button you want and you'll see a menu with a keyboard and a gamepad on it. Press the <, select, back, or options button depending on what type of controller you're using.
Be sure to apply the settings.
Holding it down prevents the "catch" icon from ever showing up. This is to prevent jamming on the button to win. Once you hook a fish you can just let go and you'll catch it automatically, you don't have to do anything else until the next round.
However, if you slowly and methodically tap it, holding it down for a moment before letting up and holding it down again, you'll eventually get the "!" prompt and catch the fish 100% of the time. It takes a little longer for the prompt to show up using this method, but it will eventually if you keep at it.
I beat the mini-game easily this way when I got sick of missing the tougher fish all the time because the window to catch them is so small.
Once you're done with the mini-game, go back and undo it the same way. It will get in the way and cause a lot of accidental activations if you leave the button on turbo outside of the mini-game.
Incidentally, this works with any game you're using a gamepad with, and you can set up any controller however you want using the Controller Configuration in Steam. You can even emulate keyboard and mouse controls, set up the gyro if the gamepad has one, and even bind the PS4 controller's touchpad to do what you want.
It's super useful for setting up keyboard hotkeys for example. Using activators, you can set the D-pad on a controller to up to twelve different hotkeys without using diagnonal input by binding differnet keys to activate whether you press it once, double tap, or hold down any direction.
You can also set up the start/select buttons to open up to six different menus this way.
The only key you can't bind however you want is the PS/Xbox/Steam button in the center of most gamepads. This works with every game on Steam.
I used the same strategy for the 1st 2 rounds, then for the 3rd I used shrimplets to catch kasago, kasago to catch sea bass, then sea bass to catch marlins. Caught a couple of gigangoras along the way as well. As long as you know what you are doing with the baits, it's just down to reflexes/practice, and luck with regards to what your opponent gets.
If you're struggling to get the timing right for hits, maybe worth booting up SC and just practising a bit with the pressure off. Good luck!
Thank you - just about exactly year later, you helped me get through the 15 round fishing battle. First one was a breeze, second i was fine once i read up on bait and rods, then the last one i was simply not quick enough using normal one button press - i wonder if i have some lag somewhere in the input chain.
Anyway, using this method I only missed 1 out of maybe 25 attempts (i started using it halfway through a round). Ironically, the time i won he only got like 550 points, while i had 1300+. Every other time he was 1000+
