do you meet the base requirements for the game, are your graphics drivers up to date, I have only just downloaded this and it plays fine for me, so it has to be a driver issue I think

I have and this problem with a lot of the older games, it seems to be ones which use directx9. Most of the time I can fix it by running the game in windowed mode. However if the game does not start in windowed mode i have to go and find the configuration file the game is using for the graphics options and change it. These can be in two locations, under the steam/steamapps/common directory for the game, or under the windows documents directory for the game. In the case of Nancey Drew, it seems to make a copy of the configuration file it uses under the documents directory, namely - C:\Users\<your username>\Documents\Trail of the Twister\Twister.ini. In the case of the Trail of the Twister Nancey Drew Game. Find the one for your game, and edit it, change the WindowMode=2, or try different numbers. I think 2 is the default.

Spent the past hour looking into the exact problem but with Nancy Drew: The Haunting of Castle Malloy, so I could play it with my gaming buddy. It seems a few games in the series have a similar issue. We spent a long time too trying alternative ways that we were close to giving up for tonight.

Thanks Astrid! Your advice worked perfectly. We changed it to fullscreen in the game menu when it started so it didn't stay windowed. Looking forward to trying out the game now. :)
