No, I actually hate the movie, and saw it about a couple months before the game release. I guess main inspiration was from japanese manga, and russian/european sci-fi books.

were you also inspired by kabaneri of the iron fortress, a couple of my friends were reminded of it when they saw me playing it. I watched it because of this game actually. So thanks for that I suppose

I'm thinking the same thing, great anime, but the ending was terrible. Wondering what Russian piece he's referring to though? The Metro series?

Wow did those guys ever pump out a lot of books during their time. Just glancing at the Wikipedia page and the descriptions of some of the books, it's pretty clear where the bleak atmosphere of the game came from.
