Alternate end boss?

I see that there are screenshots of the player fighting what seems to be the 'super golem' that you use to defeat the Velian queen:

I don't remember ever fighting this thing when I played the game through.
Is this an alternate ending or do you follow a certain path to encounter this scenario?
