Mr. rabbit, once you use the knife on the hand you can't get it back, this also means that you'll never be able to get the card fromt he owl portrait if you haven't by that point in the game. I am now stuck in the room having to restart again (first time was me going to the wrong room by mistake and realizing it after i'd entered)

No need to restart. You do not need the knife, because you can use the swords after.
