it's normal for this game. It's running on a fixed FPS number.
You can change the FPS in the ingame settings (fast forward is 12FPS default)

Since the smallest unit a vehicle can move in the x axis is two pixels (due to how a pixel game based isometric engine works). High FPS will not give a smoother movement of the trains (only of the cursors). But feel free to change the FPS in the extended settings or on the commandline. FPS faster than 50 will burn electricity though. Remember, the whole world with all the moving things needs to be updated each frame. This is a tad more than 50 monsters in a FPS.
OpenTTD has a fixed FPS of 25 by the way which is even stronger coded with the map size.
The display may lagging if you zoom out on large maps and large screens. It usually recovers quickly afterwards.

seems like a good excuse and all, but even just in the tutorial simutrans is pushing out 4 fps. this is not normal especially for a higher end machine lol. just seems like its optimized poorly compared to openttd.

shame, i really wanted to give it a shot.

5fps just sitting still in tutorial is gross lol.

5 fps is not normal. Try disabling the Steam UI (from the game options in your library). It may be the cause.

steam overlay is disabled.
Bear in mind that Simutrans does graphics calculations on the CPU. This isn't normally an issue but are you using a very old CPU? Or a very large map?

tested it on a 128x128 map, still the same. and im using a 5800x, seems to do fine with other games similar and even more in depth games like star citizen.

I have no idea why its being so weird. i tried reinstalling it too, no difference. 5 fps.

I was having trouble(pauses and stuttering) due to verbose logging to simu.log. Now mine is a special case(short bus type special) as I run a screwball custom netbooted linux setup, So I don't think it is the same problem, and my fix certainly will not help, but for completeness here it is. I was unable to find where logging level was set so I rednecked a fix by deleting ~/simutrans/simu.log and made a fifo in it's place, I then have to remember to pipe that fifo to /dev/null after I start a game(the game will hang untill a reader is attached tot the fifo)

The level of logging was certainly set too high. I've reduced it (from level 5 to level 2), so you shouldn't need to pipe it any longer.

Big salutes, And thank you for the work putting simutrans on steam. It does make it very easy to play.

Sadly none of the tricks here helped. It's a problem I had already for a few years, but until some of the last updates the game came with a pre-launcher that allowed one to toggle midi-music. I found that toggling it (either from on to off or vice versa) before starting the game fixed the issue for me. Since this launcher is now gone it only runs at 5fps always.

You can disable the music from the in-game settings. The setting will be preserved and applied at game start.
