2) there are mods, yes, but the game does not need them. Based on my expercience vanilla WBC 3 is even more stable, than WBC 2 was.
3) buy it anywhere, but not UBI. Or go for the TPC mod (which is like 90% of WBC 3 + 10% of new content)
I was playing high elves and noticed I can't send anything into the mines unless I summon something that can do that.
What races can use mines, or, what is the strategy for those races that cannot fill their mines?
And as you found out there are some magic types that can help Elves fill their mines, such as Necromancy and Summoning, and if Nature could summon Oakmen that would also be an option for a Druid or Ranger hero.
The Protectors is a good overhaul, but it does change a lot of things about the various factions. Removing or adding units, changing the racial skills you'd get on your hero, and of course adding a lot of features not part of the vanilla game. Some good, some questionable, but overall a good package and likely the most stable and least crash prone way to play the game on modern hardware as far as I am aware.
Hope you have fun with this old gem of a game.
