water stream + gate keys

How do I block the water stream so I can get down the canal?
Also, where are the keys from the gate that conects Mountain pass with Dry Riverbed/Appricot valley?
I am stuck on this quest for several "game days" and I don't know If I should go forward with the story or not (I just climbed the High tower and got my walkie-talkie)

I think there are no keys, you can just break the lock with your crowbar but only from one side of the gate. Follow the canal and you will find a sleuth gate behind the gate you just broke open (the place with the waterfall and small pond, behind the waterfall there is a qick travel point). There you have to use a wrench. You can craft one or you can find one in a small shack, if you enter through the bull gate turn right, there is also a health pack.

But you don't need this for the game to end, it is just a small thing you can find in the canal.
