Feed the dog in the beach house

how to feed the dog in the basement kennel in the beach house.

I have the tin can in the action menu, but when I click on the icon of the bowl, it is filled but after that nothing happens.

the dog always barks and imposible to recover the key.

I gave 4 cans and 3 rats, it does not work.

I find that the interface of the equipment is not very intuitive.

You'll be doing backtracking at points in the game, and you don't get the poison recipe until you've reached the first mountain.
