I think the filters were kept mostly to provide tension (even if you are not in any real danger of running out of them). The thought of suffocating is always in the back of your mind, and coupled with the breathing and gasping sound effects, and the need to wipe your mask really adds to the immersion.
It takes away from the immersion having the watch beep. Why not just have each filter last 20 minutes, if they aren't going to let you struggle for air?
You can't even ignore filters most of the time, to at least try to make it more challenging for yourself, because you automatically pick them up usually when you pick up other things.
I preferred the method in 2033, where you see each item highlighted on your HUD, so you know what to pick up and what to leave, and the ammo pouches you saw on the enemy were exactly what you picked up. That was such a clever way of doing looting, I loved it and I miss it quite a bit here.
But I don't want it to seem like I don't like this game... I freakin' love it. It took some time to grow on me, especially with the difficulty being so easy at the start. But the challenge has grown, I have had some tough fights, and only just made it through some places.
The atmosphere and immersion are mostly unmatched by any other game (except 2033), and the gameplay for the most part, is just awesome.
Great job 4A, you are great devs. Would like to see them do something new next, not another metro game. They seem to be good at coming up with new ideas, so I don't want to see them turn into another IW, churning out sequel after sequel every year or so.
I did find something that really broke the immersion for me and that is the human enemy AI. When stealthing, you can basically crouch and walk up to them to the point of touching and they wont notice you, even if you are in front of them. I think devs could fix this by adding a half-foot wide area around npcs where if you breach it from the front or the sides it will automatically detect you.
This game I havent really got that scared exept when the spiders came from all sides and just makes sounds.
But I do prefer this one as it got more towns and more feeling to thoes (metro 2033 werent bad but this is just beter)
1) You don't have to worry about money
2) You don't have to worry too much about ammo
3) You don't EVER have to worry about filters
4) You could take a couple of shots from guns in 2033, you can take 5-8 in this
5) mutants could hit you like 1-2 times and you were dead in 2033, in this they can hit you up to 5 times and you can still live
This is an awesome game, but it IS too easy in most places. The only time it gets hard (stupidly so) is ridiculous boss battles
Oh yeah, boss battle difficulty is out of whack. That big shrimp boss was a pita.
mmmm.....pita shrimp......*homer drool*
