Metro 2033 vs Metro Last Light
Which do you think is better, and why?

I'm actually disappointed to say that Metro 2033 is much better than it's sequel; I'd had faith that 4A Games would improve upon the previous title, but honestly I just feel like I'm playing something that's dumbed down and not nearly the same quality as the original. I've only played a bit of Last Light and thus far I'm unimpressed; Ranger Hardcore is too easy, the graphics aren't as good, the gameplay just doesn't feel the same (I don't really know how to describe it), the AI is dumb.

With all that said, LL isn't a bad game. It just hasn't appealed to me as much as 2033 did. Just my opinion. :)

I don't know how far you are, but I am near the end I think, and I am starting to have trouble with ammo.
Filters on the other hand, might as well have not been in the game at all. Each filter lasts 5 minutes, and I have picked up probably 5 times more filters than I have already used. I might need another couple, but I must have picked up 20 or so now, with 5 minutes each. I even took my time wandering around, and when he start running low on time I was hoping the next filter would say only 1 minute or something, but no, straight back up to 5 minutes.
But ammo is becoming a bit of a scarcity, because I am using so much against mutants now. No way to stealth, and you can only carry 150 AK rounds at a time, plus 1 clip. I have had to use MGR a couple of times against the stupid bosses.
However, some of what I said about difficulty I now take back. It has a very steady difficulty curve, and by 8 hours in, it starts to become a challenge.
But it still takes a nosalis 3-4 hits to kill me, and even a boss can hit me 2-3 times before I die.
I have even taken on 2 demons in quick succession. This was something you avoided at all costs in the first game, even on regular difficulty, because demons were the top beast, you could not beat them unless you had tons of ammo and weren't scared of death. In this they are still great, and tough, but you have to fight them, and they aren't nearly as tough as they were in 2033.
But this game is still fantastic. Not as good as metro 2033 in terms of gameplay. But in terms of immersion and atmosphere, it is just as good.

I only wish these aspects that have been dumbed down were the same as they were in 2033. It would add so much to this game

I think the filters were kept mostly to provide tension (even if you are not in any real danger of running out of them). The thought of suffocating is always in the back of your mind, and coupled with the breathing and gasping sound effects, and the need to wipe your mask really adds to the immersion.

After the second trip outside I have never once thought of suffocating, because I know that unless I take off my mask and kill myself, then suffocation isn't possible.
It takes away from the immersion having the watch beep. Why not just have each filter last 20 minutes, if they aren't going to let you struggle for air?
You can't even ignore filters most of the time, to at least try to make it more challenging for yourself, because you automatically pick them up usually when you pick up other things.
I preferred the method in 2033, where you see each item highlighted on your HUD, so you know what to pick up and what to leave, and the ammo pouches you saw on the enemy were exactly what you picked up. That was such a clever way of doing looting, I loved it and I miss it quite a bit here.

But I don't want it to seem like I don't like this game... I freakin' love it. It took some time to grow on me, especially with the difficulty being so easy at the start. But the challenge has grown, I have had some tough fights, and only just made it through some places.
The atmosphere and immersion are mostly unmatched by any other game (except 2033), and the gameplay for the most part, is just awesome.

Great job 4A, you are great devs. Would like to see them do something new next, not another metro game. They seem to be good at coming up with new ideas, so I don't want to see them turn into another IW, churning out sequel after sequel every year or so.

Last light better for me except new Ulman's face, stupid grenade managment(not comfortable on ranger hardcore) and there is no pipe with needles except this it's much better for me.

Just finished the first playthough and my opinion still stands, LL is better overall. 2033 I think was more of a nostalgic feeling because it was such a unique experience, especially from the Stalker series. But LL is refined to accomodate not only the hardcore enthusiast but also players who are more interested in the story. Both are excellent works although both were a bit buggy. I guess the cumulative Metacritic scores says it all, Metro 2033 = 81 Metro LL = 82. Looks like its a bit of a draw. Time to go back and try Ranger Hardcore . . .

I played 2033 several times. LL I will only play once for shure...if I ever play it through to the end. Not shure about this.

I think it's pretty much the same as 2033, with some slight rebalancing. I'm not finding the mutant combat as brutal as 2033, unfortunately. Both games are a step down from the kind of game I really want to be playing though, which is Stalker. Occasionally there's a flash of that in the atmosphere of exploring the surface areas, but it's all too brief. Then you're back in the linear tunnels of bad acting and worse AI. Still, overall it's a great game, better than 95% of shooters out there.

IMHO, both games are good. But Metro 2033 is much harder in aiming and shooting, LL has more stealth... and both games are not as close to the plot of the book :)

I don't really see how anybody could like 2033 better. I feel like LL does just about everything better. Atmosphere, graphics, gameplay (both stealth and the feel of shooting,) and the scripted sequences run more smoothly. And the game while still linear is way more open.

I did find something that really broke the immersion for me and that is the human enemy AI. When stealthing, you can basically crouch and walk up to them to the point of touching and they wont notice you, even if you are in front of them. I think devs could fix this by adding a half-foot wide area around npcs where if you breach it from the front or the sides it will automatically detect you.

I feel metro 2033 was much more scary each time I play that game even thoe I know exacly whats gonna happen and when its gonna happen I get freaked out.

This game I havent really got that scared exept when the spiders came from all sides and just makes sounds.

But I do prefer this one as it got more towns and more feeling to thoes (metro 2033 werent bad but this is just beter)

So far it is just as hard on hardcore. Really people, Metro 2033 was not THAT hard, just a lot o fun :) . Really Like Last Light so far, probably best game in the past 2 years so far.
This isn't NEARLY as hard.
1) You don't have to worry about money
2) You don't have to worry too much about ammo
3) You don't EVER have to worry about filters
4) You could take a couple of shots from guns in 2033, you can take 5-8 in this
5) mutants could hit you like 1-2 times and you were dead in 2033, in this they can hit you up to 5 times and you can still live

This is an awesome game, but it IS too easy in most places. The only time it gets hard (stupidly so) is ridiculous boss battles

I really liked LL because i felt more like Artyom and how he's dealt with everything he's had to do. I couldn't really choose from the two because for me i always loved the characters and story. Atmosphere wise id say LL wins for me. Although i do think the dark areas really need to be DARK. I didnt really like how you could get so close to npcs even though you could see them from so far away in the darkness but they couldnt see you. Even with gamma at its lowest i can still see perfectly fine.
