Switching ammo types

So, after giving up on playing through Ranger Mode Hardcore because it gives you nothing to go off of (I mean really? IRL I can count my ammo, in game I can't have a freakin clue what I have), so I knocked it down to Ranger normal and still can't even figure out how to switch ammo types, or even if I have match grade loaded. Tab does nothing, and holding down R to switch ammo like in the first game does nothing. What am I missing?

I loved Ranger Hardcore in the first, but it at least gave me info to go off of, so I could check things. Having no indicator at all is not only not good gameplay wise, but it isn't even realistic.

holding R changed the ammo type for me, how far in were you

Hold Tab, then press R. You should see the military grade bullets indicator in the top right light up. Do the same thing to switch back to normal.

No Hoqjed, that only works in normal ranger mode. Tab in HARDCORE mode only allows you to change secondary weapons based on memorizing the directional selection, because all they did was remove the HUD. Lazy and thoughtless design choice making hardcore practically unplayable for the thinking gamer.
