Do I need to play 2033 before this game?
Is the story continued in this game so that I need to know what happened in 2033?

Yes, it's a direct sequel. If you enjoy following storylines from the beginning I recommend either playing 2033 or reading up on it on-line.

Yes 2033 is the better game.

The story is easy enough to follow and you could put the pieces together without playing Metro 2033, but I would suggest playing Metro 2033 anyway because it's great.

I haven't played 2033 yet but I got the gist of the story during the first couple of missions in Last Light.

So no, it's not nessesarily to play the first game, but you'll probably have a fuller understanding if you do.

LL doesn't use save games from 2033, so you are forced to use the Hostile story line e.g. if you chose to save them at the end of 2033 and not nuke them the story line in LL does not have that option.

So not really. Just be aware if you do plan on playing 2033, it is very hardware picky and will crash a lot.

I think it's better not to play 2033 first, since Artyom just seems inappropriately green after the events of 2033. It's like it's a reboot or a prequel (as far as the character is concerned).

TC is asking if he should play the first game, so you decide to tell him about the ending?

Also, I had to turn off PhysX but the game never crashed for me.
Metro LL has some small details about 2033, but nothing important.
