Why is SSAA so demanding in this game?
I got from 80 frames with everything max to 30 when I turn it just to x2. Is this game really that unoptimized?

no. SSAA is supersampling which means it should roughly halve your framerate if its doing what its supposed to do.

Well think about it , SSAA means Supersampling Anti-Aliasing. It ups the resolution and squeezes back down the size to fit your screen. 2x is basically running the game double the current resolution you have it set to, and so on . If you think SSAA is demanding , go try out THe Wither 2's Ubersampling AA , it renders the image multiple times and combines them all into one image and the result is a very anti-aliased image , but it's demanding because you're essentially running multiple copies of the game process at once ( 4 or more ) .

Stupid me. I was confusing it with SMAA.

Yeah I've heard of Witcher 2 lol

Actually the witcher 2 looks better without the ubersampling for some people. The graphics are too sharp otherwise its a bit more blurry.

I like it with Ubersampling because I can't handle jaggies . But yes it looks more blurry with Ubersampling on but nothing compared to FXAA blurring . I don't like it off because witcher 2 has terrible shadow dithering , shadows look like grids and this can only be cleaned up with Ubersampling sadly.

I honestly can't tell the difference with SSAA on or off. Probably due to the dark environments.

A player tend to miss most of the in-game graphical enhancements anyway, until he stands still and look around carefully.

If you can't find the need for it, then you don't need it at all.

Does SSAA upscale the game to a higher pixel rate at lower resolution

The whole idea of SSAA is to render images at higher resolution than your native one to make everything looks sharper, regardless of the actual resolution.
