Can I loot guns from dead enemies?

Hello,
it seems I only can loot ammo from guns that used to belong to dead enemies but not the guns as such, even if I have empty weapon slots. This looks like a very strange game mechanic to me. Is this intentional or am I doing something wrong?

The guns fall off the bodies and are laying beside them.

hold 'E' ('Use' Key)(or equivilant) for a longer period of time, it will switch the gun with whatever you have equipped or fill an empty slot.

@TNs Perish: Yes, I saw the glowing weapons, but didn't know how to actually pick them up (or if it was possible at all).
@ayretek: Many thanks, that works! I feel a bit stupid now. Didn't think that pressing E for a longer time would do that. Thanks again.
