In addition to this speed nerf, there is now a minimum height limit in cities that's taller than a tripod, as well as a sanity check that kills the process if you break this height limit by dashing. Ground enemies with yellow weak spots are now unreachable.

And one of the possible report categories on a store page is "Defective/non-functioning product".

Anyone else thinking what I'm thinking?

EDIT: It's a clean exit when it occurs. Attach a debugger and dash into a road and the game returns an error code of zero when it shuts off, which means normal exit.
What are you thinking?

Devs are quietly pushing updates that degrade the game to the point of unplayability. This kind of changes, like the Spintires timed crashes and Dark Souls netcode removal, violate the Steam developer policy. Reporting the game as defective will force the devs to take action, either by ousting the programmer responsible and rolling back the changes or by issuing refunds and pulling the game from Steam.

The particular category you're looking for if you flag this game is "Broken". In the additional information form, mention the recent updates.

EDIT: I decided to jump back into this game with a debugger to figure out what exactly the game does when it shuts off. Apparently this no longer works. This time, instead of exiting with code zero (No error, clean exit) when dashing down in a city it exits with code 84 on startup, which is the "not enough storage" error. Pretty strange to get this on a machine with 150 GB of free space.

Thank you for investigating! These findings are interesting to say the least. I may be jumping the gun here as I'm just paranoid by nature, but I can't help but feel like this is by design, considering the fact that the game was smooth, stable and just overall, a well crafted application before.

The noticable changes introduced by the updates after the last contact from the devs just seem so... specific.

Yeah, I don't know why they would ruin their own game. Perhaps they make bugs to "fix" them in the next update to make it seem like they have done more than they actually have? Or perhaps they accidentally pushed an unfinished version of the update they are currently working out?

I know I don't in-game, but there has to be some files that I can edit.

Pirate an older version. That's your only choice.

like i said elsewhere: very likely updates are for upcoming VR mode, please correct me if i'm wrong.

You could always play the villain mod, but if you want bug-free missions you will need to get your hands on an older version of the game. The FCMs in the villain mod just load up the game without some core engine data related to missions or casualties. This has the side effect of fixing all the recent problems.

They didn't touch enemy speed, they made it impossible to get close to the ground in cities, they enforced the height limit with a kill code, they made the game force a disk storage error if you start it with a debugger (May be some nefarious payload that failed), they encrypted the Xenocube's flight waypoints after making it chug all over the galaxy for an hour when you beat the game, and they made the rotating city flipper adhesive for good measure. I don't think this is for VR.

And using a mod that doesn't load missions, such as villain mode, fixes everything.

limiting player speed for VR seems plausible, as does height/ground limits which may effect FOV.

i just don't see why else they'd bother spending time on this unless there's an end goal such as VR.

I'm no expert, but I would guess that limiting altitude would be done without instantly crashing the game, right ? Also, as I understand it, some enemies can only be killed from below, meaning you need to get close to the ground.

Still following this thread... If that ever gets fixed, I will probably buy the game. But as it is now, I certainly won't.

Just pirate one of the earlier versions if you don't like the current speed.

Or as other people have mentioned, install mods which reverse the update's slowdown effects.
