From Wikipedia: "Unlike previous Front Mission titles which have a tactical role-playing game structure, players engage in combat in real time on 3D maps using giant robotic weapons of war known as "Wanzers." ... "1UP.com said that developer Double Helix had "good intentions" when they transformed the series from a strategy game to a third-person shooter, but was "completely unnecessary"."
So maybe if they would have renamed the game it wouldn't receive such harsh critics of changing the game so much :)
I like it but I don't know the other games.
When you go to NHL match you don't expect to see baseball right?
This game pretty much threw that idioligy out the window and said fk it. We'll take the straigy element out and replace it with a third person shooter mechanic instead.
This is why many reviews are negative.
Basically, before this one, Front Mission was about turn-based RPG with a long story, difficult situations and micro-management of everything including characters (skills & levels) and Wanzers (mechs).
Think of it as a bit like Final Fantazy Tactics with Mechs. The older (PS1) games even had foot soldiers (and you were able to exit your Wanzer).
This one is basically how Front Mission would look like if it was made in a similar way to Call of Duty in 3rd person. A super short story with no replayability or innovation where the little amount of available choices in equipment is divided by which role you gonna take and that's it. Linear gameplay from A to Z. Added PvP online mode that died rather quickly. You gonna pay again for the Online Coop which, originally, was supposed to be in the core game and it got cut down to an Arena-like survive mode. (Originally, it was supposed to be possible to play Coop in the story, but they had difficulty on the console so it got cut out.)
In other words, this game was a train wreck in many ways on both Consoles & this PC port.
I mean, I like this game, there aren't a lot of single-player, 3D mecha action games on Steam, after all. But the rationale behind it is mind-boggling. It's a franchise that's been traditionally more popular in Japan, getting a Western-focused reboot that basically aliantes long-time fans while also doing nothing to bring in new ones.
where is new AC, lol? maybe they will announce after elden ring is out, but dont have high hopes...
