either way i do find defence platforms slowing my enemy down after they go after it to attack it which is great for hiver fleets.
i belive placing the platforms near the enemy fleet spawn forces combat after all they never rushed for my planet before attacking my platforms if the fleet was far away
However I really had a change in luck when i started using a layered fleet deployment tough. Insted of using the default fleet formations I started placing rows of ship so a line was always engaging them while the line that got passed by was turning around.
When it comes to PDS I find mass missile configurations to be the best. Mainly due to the increase in range. if the enemy fleet gets within gun range the platform is pretty much doomed anyways. Also note that due to the sector limitations on PDS placements you will want to upgrade to better platforms as they become available. While the cost is higher the upkeep is the same iirc. So once i unlock the asteroid ones thats what I prefer to build. Mainly due to the sheer number of missiles it can hold.
