This is assuming that you are not using mods.
Then it could obviously be a faulty mod.
Hey Varainger,
I've tried increasing the virtual memory and no luck whatsoever for stopping the game crashing. I've tried not using any mods and still crashes sending me to the desktop with the game closed. Not sure what to do to be able to play Victoria 2 with no crashing.
Do you know anything else I could do to fix this problem?
If you want to give it a go the settings file is located where the cache gets stored (documents/paradox interactive/victoria ii/...), values of interest are fullscreen=yes (change to "no") and the resolution ("size") of the window.
And you are not trying to play an old campaign you had used a mod on then, right ?
I'll assume so.
Apart from trying to play in windowed or borderless (set borderless to yes and fullscreen to no), mode, as mentioned above, i can only recommend to make a clean install. Manualy delete both VIc2 folders (the one in Steamapps/common and the one in Documents (the latter will be auto-recreated on next launch; beforehand rescue save files and mods as you wish to use them later).
No idea for other crash reasons.
Missing system software or sound codecs should in my opinion cause issues earlier, than after playing 6 to 9 years into a game...unless you are playing on a laptop and it simply goes out of energy or the GPU heats up...or a chat programruns in the background and messes with your system.
Another option is playing the game without Steam running and seeing if that helps for whatever reason. Good luck.
