why am I not a great power?
I'm playing as westernized japan, in noone's sphere of influence, rank 7, and yet it says I am still a secondary power. Why?

Because you have to wait a year, being in someone elses sphere isn't going to get in the way of being a GP BTW.

How long has it been since you rose to above rank 8? There can be a year or two of lag time between passing up the last GP in score and actually becoming a GP because the rank 8 power has to go through the 'losing great power status' phase.

The GP replacement works like this:
Country A's actual rank drops to bellow GP level, and they are given a year or so to make a comeback, otherwise they will drop their GP status and the next in line country will progress to GP status.
tl;dr wait a year or two untill netherlands fails to make progress back into GP.

How did you know it was Netherlands which is falling? And what made you both say "year or two"? Isn't it always exactly a year? Or can GP changes only happen once every 12 months, therefore pushing it to two in some cases?

It is becouse great power that is about to fall out of this status have a year to try and fix it. Becouse, you know, just lose all your long developed spheres in one second due to some random prestige event is not very funny.

LOL! Why did you dare post this lie? Of course GPs can fall during a war, it's how Prussia/NGF players form Super/Greater Germany so easily as seen in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wm5GyjZGi9o

Now I think it might be true that they can't fall during a crisis war and possibly also great wars, but they can fall during regular wars.

I guess if you consider one ingame year ages, then yes you are correct.

Hehe, I mean, it usually takes longer for me. I'm not sure why.
Well the one year is just how long you have to wait after you've dropped their ranking out of the top eight, so if you take ages to reduce their ranking to rank nine or lower then yeah it will take ages. If you'd like I could tell you how long it takes me to knock Austria out of GP status, I started a Prussia campaign just today and have already taken Schleswig, Alsace Lorraine and formed NGF with Luxembourg included in 1839.

yes.
Alright I declared war on the 12th of January 1841 and the earliest I noticed Austria not being a GP was the 31st of August 1842, in theory that would have meant I could have made peace 15 days later but it took over a freaking year for my stupid jingoism to get high enough >:( I don't get it, I didn't lose a single battle and my war exhaustion was only 2%! What the heck game? Anyway I made peace and formed Super Germany on the 25th of December 1843.
