Would I need the DLC's to enjoy the game?

The base game is nice and cheap at the moment, and I enjoy the rest of Paradox's (admittedly more contemporary) games, so should I buy it for a fiver or is it even worth it without the expansions (which are not on reduction whatsoever)?

The game gets greatly improved and in a way fixed with the expansions (this was before Paradox new DLC policy, this one was still in the time where they struggling more to pay bills).

It's still worth it to play it for a while without them, but you will want to have them after a bit cuz the game is cool :)

Thanks for the reply mate. Would buying A house divided in its own right improve the game considerably, or is Heart of Darkness the big worthwhile expansion? Basically, why is AHD cheaper?

AHD is the first expansion and HoD is building ontop of that - so you need AHD if you want to play HoD.

A House Divided is already improving and overhauling it a good way.
HoD then "smoothes" the last edges out and implements more depth in diplomacy, colonization and late-game.

It's hard to recommend though. Maybe watch a gameplay video on Victoria 2 by Gaku or Slayzer to see what the game has to offer and whether you like it. If you do, just go for full package I'd say. You can always refund if you haven't played more than 2 hours on Steam (which is barely enough to get an impression, but at least its something).

be like me: buy the base game now and then wait for Heart of Darkness and A House Divided dlcs to go on sale. those are the only two dlcs you really need. the rest are purely cosmetic. in short, don't pay full price for a 10 year old game
