The determining of who is war leaders seems to boil down to military score although sometimes it doesn't; it's a bit weird. Best is not to invite nations into a war that have more points than you.
Hope there will once be an update that changes that stupidity of you allies making peace when you are the one who started the war.
Second, you need to consider who you should call into a war. Not calling a Great Power ally into a war is a big mistake, especially if that war is gonna be a long and gruelsome one. Even if you could beat a Franco-Russian alliance single-handedly, it's gonna be your biggest mistake unless you're just gonna have a one-month war. AI will tend to break your alliance if you're in a war for quite a while. And knowing that they're GPs, they'll find someone else to befriend, and you'll lose him/her in return for your indecisive actions.
Third, fighting France is not gonna be easy. Very often you'll find that France AI uses the most effective tactic ever, deathstacking. Any AI will easily be beaten by this dirty tactic by France, especially if France is on the defense (i.e. French lands being besieged). Using your conventional methods of having army composition of 50% infantry 35% artillery 10% cavalry 5% engineer is sufficient, but by the end of the war, your armies will be very worn out.
I usually counter their tactic with their tactic (get it?). Either chase them, or lure them and try to win with sheer force, and when they retreat, give them a chase. They'll usually retreat into a province with bigger armies, but by then you have halfed one of their big deathstacks so just keep stacking more and more and you'll eventually find that their brigade count of 250-200 (might even be 300 overall) goes down to 70-50 and eventually zero.
