The Red Shirts got… well… "red shirted" I guess.
So, I was playing as Sardigna-Piedmont: things were going along well, by the mid 60s my tiny Kingdom had Conquered most of the Maghreb appart from the lands already owned by France and Spain, all political reforms had been implemented, Lombardy and Sicily had been conquered, The state's budget was highly positive, the fleet and naval bases were large enough to prepare for a fast and profitable scramble to Africa…

And then the Redshit rebels event happened.
Normally that shouldn't have been much of a problem: Let Garibaldi works his magic, and since my Sardigna-Piedmont was already a Great Power and dominant force in the Western Mediterranean, it would be converted into Italy, get control of the rest of the peninsula, and have 80+ years to keep going along with a souped up Italian Kingdom with hopefully the ressources to stave of the rise of local fascists in the late game…

Except only four Redshirt units (12.000 men) spawned in Tuscany and got immediatelly crushed by the local troops.

So I'm now left with one questions: do the Redshirt event repeast in case of failure (I mean, it would make kinda sense historically: Garibaldi had unsuccesfully fought for the short lived Roman Republic in 1849 only to help cripple the Papal States 12 years later)?

I mean, I know it's theoretically possible to unify Italy by putting all Italian states within my sphere of influence to unlock an event, but the Papal States are within France's spehere of influence whose already made them expel my diplomats twice meaning I can't improve my standing with Rome. A solution would theoretically to start a war against the Papal States to forcibly bring them into my shere of influence and countring on my German allies to keep the French busy while my own troops are marching to Rome, but that's an option I'd rather avoid (Wars between industrialized Great Powers can be long and costly and the allies' IA sometimes make stupid blunders)

You can form Italy within a few years with Sardinia. All you gotta do is to wage war on an Italian country and hold them occupied, driving militancy up. After a short while the Red shirts will revolt and you just let them besiege your targets capital. Ta-da you're Italy.

So to answer your initial question: The red shirts simply revolt at high militancy afaik. They will keep revolting until eventually successful.
