Tips for learning this game?
I've got the CD copy and the whole dynamic campaign in the Balkans fascinated me but these flight sims are really hard to figure out.

There are loads of youtube videos. Loads of them. You really do need to spend a good while. I mean, if you want to get deep into it. When you have some basics, join a vitutal flying group, and they have folks that teach you the details.

That, though, is hours of commitment.

On the other hand you can use it just as a flight sim, and set up safe places to fly and what not. Loads of ways to approach it. Youtube is your first call. Type "BMS Tutorial" or something like that.

Falcon BMS is the best way to play the game right now. It has fully 3d cockpit and many more theaters available for it than Allied Force. I've learned the game by using this video first https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uU3pmXvnc0k and then proceeded to use tutorials by Krause https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiUYrtpW7ww&list=PL3E09AA94FF0EACEC which are more in-depth and still mostly fit 4.33 version. Entirely ignored all manuals/tutorials that came with the mod - which are way way too anti-newbie - up until I got really comfortable with the game.

I've also used this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00sUpUYh89s to get help setting up my HOTAS since no config available on forums tailored well enough to my playstyle.

Yeah, game's very complex and it took me 7 days of learning and dogfighting AI in furballs before I've gotten into the campaign. But OMG is it one hell of a SANDBOX, an ultimate strategic (not just flight sim) playground that is really really worth it. You can fly a single plane or go as far as commanding an entire army.
