Sword of the Stars 3
I'd love to see a sots 3 and i think that the core of sots 2 (when it works) is a good place to start.
1. Obviously bug fixing needs to happen so that it doesnt crash (i didn't expereience too many crashes but my pc is pretty weird)
2. tech tree needes to start from the base of sots 1 with sots 2 techs added on, not starting at fusion.
3. researching feasibility needs to be separate from researching tech, low cost and lead on to other techs, for example, if you successfully research beamers, you will be more likely to discover that phasers are feasible
4. add destroyers again, like i said, the game has to be the full scope from sending out tiny ships one at a time to giant fleets
5. hex based management of planets similar to galciv but with ground units so you can take planets ground pounders style with troop transporters
6. rework communications, if a ship or planet is 4 ly away then anything that happens to it should get to you 4 turns late before you research ftl coms or instant coms, i think this could lead to interesting command distribution where you would need to set a command world for you to be based on to recive messages, not too far away from battle as for messages to take too long and not to close or it will get invaded, the director (if its solforce were talking about) will die and you'll get a big, impactful moral drop.
7. independant colonies can become space faring if you give them ftl tech or lose a battle to them and they use your stuff (also i love the idea of funding civilian colonisation and asteroid mining)
8. it needs a reasonable ai. i genuinely don't understand hwo they went from the really quite good ai of sots 1 to the absolutly appauling on in sots 2. If you give a sots 1 ai unlimited funds it will destroy you. A sots 2 ai will build hundreds of cruisers with tripple turret gausse guns.
9. Lastly, modding support would be good so when they do ♥♥♥♥ it up i can personally fix it.

If anyone has any other ideas, i'd love to hear.

Posting this here because sots 2 forum is pretty dead.

The dev switched to silly 2d sprite games, because that's where the money is.
Hammon May 8, 2018 @ 3:11pm
On top of that, the devs completely gutted themselves financially over SoTS II and due to the debacle, they cannot maintain enough people to produce more complex games.

Yeah, based on the Kerberos forum activity of late, I'd say things are pretty dead... only about three people ever post anything and I rarely see any posts from Kerberos staff (except the ocassional response by Mecron). That and the fact that they seem to really be focusing on their board game makes me wonder how much software development they're even doing these days. Not even a thread about current projects on their forums, which really makes me wonder. Mercon might have thrown in the towel to focus on things he seems to enjoy more. I'm a little yonger than he is and I'm already looking forward to my retirement! If I were him I might be thinking the same. But I'm always hopeful we'll still see something wonderful come out of nowhere. I really wish we could get some more work done on SOTS2. Its engine is still relatively modern and with some more work could really be a sweet game. Even if it just meant a little more work by Kerberos to expose more game elements to config files (like AI behavior). The dream lives on in us, the fans.

from what i've seen of the developers and writes, the sots-verse is passion project for them, i hope that they get the funds they need from 2d games to work on a more complex title in the future. After all, grand strategy and 4x is making a comeback.

The Boardgame, the upcoming Pit 2 PC game and Pit FPS are precursors to a new SOTS 4x.

If you want to see more SOTS 4x from Kerberos, then support their other projects!

Start with the rebooted kickstarter for the boardgame!

All excelent ideas.
I especially love the one about delayed info before FTL coms are developed. This could actually be a tree, with various stages, etc.

In addition, what about leaders, commanders (ground / space / logistics / governing / etc. Might this be modded on the spy coding?

For now, I still only play SOTS one (original) Modded

Honestly, sots1 with full solar systems and the 3 side armour system of sots 2 would get me spending.

the armor system basically works as each ship having 4 sides represented by green bars, all different weapons make different shapes in the armor, high explosive armor peircing rounds will go in about 4 bars before exploding while missiles explode on impact, if a path is poened up to the blue lines, the ship starts to take hull damage. Armor damage can be repared with certain psi or goo modules.

If one side is really badly damaged, you can roll the ship to expose a different side to the enemy to prevent hull damage.

Its a really cool system, in my opinion, just a shame there was so much else wrong with the game.

Is interesting. Ship name? Is that from Babylon 5?

Yeah, sots 1 has loads of scifi referances in the planet names, sots 2 also has a function which automtically gives your ships themed names (based on your species), some of them are referances.

I would LOVE a SotS 3 IN THE MOLD OF SotS 1, NOT 2!
Or a HD remake of SotS 1 would also be epic!

For a games like I am, SotS2 was WAY to indirect in terms of how you moved fleets around. That alone killed it for me, that whole style of goal-based control over your empire.

Much much much prefer the SotS 1 style.

That's odd. I never had a problem sending a fleet where I wanted it in SOTS 2. The fleet and mission system actually made sense and went a long way toward not cluttering up the map with scattered ships as well as making late game control much less of a hassle.

The problem is that SOTS 2 never got to be finished so you are complaining you hate something that never got a proper chance to be refined or polished let alone completely built.

In any case a SOTS 1 remake is definitely coming. Just a matter of time.

It was such a shame about SOTS II.

All Kereberos had to do was update the 3d graphics a bit, add a few new features and keep the mechanics esentially the same.

I don't know how it went so badly wrong.

I love both sots 1 and sots 2, I really wish they would combine the performance of sots 1 with sots 2, i'm 600+ turns in sots 2 and the game just crashes on the biggest maps, it's unacceptable, the game should be playable in all modes.
