Hacking saved games?
Does anyone else hack the 1st Jan 36 saved games to make the game more variable? I normally try a x5 research modifier for the Germans and then play with no trade or allies and then the challenge is to conquer the entire world before 1964...its not easy especially when you have to take on Italy and Japan as well...

I agree, I actually played hoi3 before AoD and I was at first put off by the simpler map and interface as well as other mall thing. This is back when hoi3 came out and it was a buggy mess so AoD soon became my favourite in the series.

Started with HoI2 and moved to AoD not soon after. I've tried HoI3, but never could get into it. The fancy graphics are not really a must for me since I prefer playing with counters instead of sprites anyways. Being a history guy, I often add province pictures and other things to make the game even more immersive.

I never played hoi2, but as I understand it, it is just like AoD minus some stuff like an extended timeline. Is that true?

HoI3 is just too much to handle. I have tried playing it a number of times and always just given up. HoI2 is more basic than AoD but with less time and more manual systems (like counter-spy) which make it a bit of a drag to play now compared to AoD. I think if they just worked on the AI for AoD rather than too many other changes it would make it a better game. Perhaps even reasonable whatif events (Hitler assasinated in 1937, Stalin falls to ill health in 1941, White Russia won the civil war, or the US is still a British colony... and just have them available as tick boxes on the 1936 scenario... That would be fun.

In general you could say that the game mechanics are less complicated. One major improvement of AoD over HoI2 and DH is the concept of supply stocks for troops. For instance you could in theory station a fleet permanently at a certain sea province.

Interesting, I think that hoi3's biggest failing was that it had too much scope. The chain of command system was cool and so was the brigade system, but I found the way they were implemented really tedious. Same with the provinces, it gave more tactical ability, but it made things much harder to manage. Add to that the amount of bugs and silly mechanics like a nation you are at war with surrendering to an ally of yours instead of you and your ally annexes the entire country.

Start the game as Romania, declare war on hungary, save the game right away and re-enter as Germany... watch the world go up in flames :')

I used to hack the save files in HoI 1 All the time and once even conquered ALL of the americas as the US by 1938-39. In AoD I'm just fiddling around and like with the main focus of these games, doing What-If scenarios Like if Japan building it's economy on trade prior to 1938 and moving it's economy to free market slowly over time with the intent of forming an alliance with the US to invade the Soviet Union. Also a scenario with the US (I'm hacking the save file to change them slightly such as a big increase in industrial ability) with the intent of expanding the concept of Manifest Destiny and becoming a superpower before 1939.

I have a question here and I'd like to know what words to search for (Using Wordpad to open the save files) so I can find the tech teams and research lines faster instead of scrolling down hours after finding the lines that make the US what it is. I'd also like to know how to edit things like a province's developement level (Industry, Infrastructure, AA, Forts, etc.) so I can make scenarios focusing on turning a nation with ordinarily no chance of victory whatsoever (Excluding victory in an alliance. Basically nations like Luxembourg, Tanu Tuvva, Estonia and other nations that exist only because of the goodwill of their neighbors.)

Also I challenge someone here to conquer china as Communist China without using any cheats or savegame hacks. If someone accomplishes this seemingly impossible (yet historical) feat, I'd like to hear about it.

When searching for a country in a save, it's best to search for their capital. So for the USA search 'capital = 606'. You can find the tech teams being used by then searching 'team_slots'. You can then find the techs being researched by searching 'application'.

You can find the IDs of techs here: http://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/showthread.php?802193-List-of-Tech-Developments&p=18122916&viewfull=1#post18122916

You can edit provinces by finding the ID of a province, then editing its infra level etc there. Search for them by 'province', then the ID of the province.

You can find out the ID of provinces via this website: http://maps.ederon.net/hoi2iom.aspx

I normally use Krupp for Germany but watch for the Dutch name too, Zhukov for USSR, and New York for the USA (battleship). I will check out the map number link above as it looks good. I recently also created a chaos world scenario with few mods for Germany but giving the rest of the world unrest, and sit back and watch the US, USSR, Britain, France etc all descend into chaos and you pick and choose when to strike. Its fun in that all the new nations are good targets.
