Why do you insist on calling women SIR?
Looks like a cool game like sim city. I watched the two videos and in the second one I heard a male actor call a female actor sir several times.
This makes no sense to me. It’s like calling a woman a man or vice versa.

This is fairly common in games/movies, where all officers seem to be addressed as "sir"

We're in 2019... So may be she identifyies as a man, may be her prefered pronoun is he, may be etc... Let your imagination run wild...

It's clown world after all...

Or Tal'Raziid is right but it's too reasonnable for our time...

This is a common military fiction thing, I'm not sure how well it maps onto the real world. Officers in the fiction I've read - especially naval officers - are usually referred to as Sir regardless of gender.

As I understand it its like others have said a military reason, as to why its like that in real life is firstly rank is important to respect in the military for disciple etc (kind of like politicians in the UK referring to "the right honorable..." even when they clearly mean the opposite) so thats part of the reason,

the second part as I understand it is for communications sake, where they could use Ma'am or something, however the chance that errors in communications increases, often radios etc that militaries use can have distortion or something load in the back ground and with how important an error can be often words that can cause confusion are replaced, why you'll hear things like Niner (actually supposed to be pronounced 'Ni-Nuh') part of that is confusion for German for no ', or why they don't tend to use terms like six hundred, instead they will use Six-Zero-Zero, and things like the Phonetic Alphabet, you also have to account for accents or alternate terms even for people of the same language (alot of English words are different from US english, and even US english can have very different pronunciation or terms themselves) etc, basically Ma'ma is more annoying than Sir, so military prefers just calling everyone of higher rank sir (...mostly)

Hi. As other replies have mentioned, it's pretty common in sci-fi as an address for senior figures. We're still working on the story elements and dialog, so it might shift, but this is generally a pretty typical form of address and will likely remain.

Old naval tradition. Navigator is always "Mister", for example. That is even weirder than "Sir".
And I bet the real reason is superstition, whatever officials may say. Women on board were doom, so better disguise and address them as men in front of the ship spirit...
From my personal experience, they probably still are, for some very practical reasons.

i just came to term with the fact that noone is adding additional complaints........guess im wrong...

i cant wait for the next hilarious thing people like that throw into the mix

and just my 2 cents ... in the military afaik ... everyone is addressed with a male rank ... regardless of gender... the only deviance maybe is in the German Army/Navy in which sometimes Females are adressed with a femalized rank.. aka Herr General/ Frau General mostly because we dont have to change the Rank. just the german pronoun (like in the US its just General regardless what Gender stays before you).... but srsly we dont want to open this can of worms here or we extend this conversation until our sun burns out

we could adress females with "Honey whats goin on up there".... "Sweety can you just shut up for a minute im trying to work here"... and so on ...... or the good old one.... "Sweetheart go to the kitchen and fetch me a Beer"

Incorrect. US Army uses "ma'am" and "ladies" to address single or groups of female officers, respectively.
Most ranks dont really have a gender, regardless. A private is a private, a sergeant is a sergeant. They're genderless nouns

never heard Lady General or Ma´m general...... every case i witnessed it was General nothing else.... and also adressing a female superior officer with sir isnt that abnormal either.. i give you the ma´am if the conversations starts with that but the General part isnt there most of the times

noone says "sir general"
you seem to not have an understanding of rank titles at all.
a singular male officer is addressed as "sir" or their rank, depending on the situation.
a singular female officer is addressed as "ma'am" or by rank
Orici Vintarion 2020 年 1 月 18 日 下午 5:26
last i checked i was in the army and if we adressed a superior officer we adressed them with rank and then the surname... there was no pronounce involved at all ( and the rank wasnt femalized if that even is a thing)

Well the correct female equivalent of Sir is Dame. I suppose you could address them as Madam or Ma'am. Sir is male specific and just comes off odd as if the person addressing them isn't confident in how to address them.

If they have a rank or title, the rank or title is used. Ie You address a General, as a General, or a Captain as Captain, or Governor etc. For example the Queen can be address as 'Your majesty' which is neutral and then Ma'am there after.

When not addressing by a title the gender specific nouns are be used.

If its common to call Women 'Sir' in Sci fi then you have been watching bad Sci-fi that is scared of offending crazy people. Whereas most of us don't care about it and just wish they would use the correct language instead of making their characters look like idiots.

Real world example:

Addressing Queen Elizabeth II in Person
Make a small curtsy, bow, or nod.
Politely shake the Queen's hand if offered.
Wait for Her Majesty to address you.
Address her as "Your Majesty" the first time in the conversation.
Address her as "Ma'am" for the rest of the conversation.
Don't ask personal questions.
Don't turn your back on the Queen until the conversation is over.

If its good enough for the Queen of England and Scotland its definitely the correct method of address.
