It doesn't even attach, just falls to the floor. Or do I need to hold it as I turn?

Nope, if you've solved the wall sliding puzzle it should just snap in securely, it sounds like you've pretty much solved it but it might be worth checking out on youtube? - so long as you don't watch the next scene there aren't any spoilers in the psych scene

Just start throwing everything around I believe the battery spawns on the floor under the shelf where the red mask is at the beginning, but in the middle of the shelf on the floor.

ive completed the game but when showing friends the game we solve the puzzle but it just doesnt attach for some reason, ive tried it 3-4 more times and still doesn't work. i must of just got lucky when i did it
