How does the multiplayer work?

I'm thinking of getting the game, but have a question about the multiplayer.
Is it only LAN? Do you have to play with Steam friends who have the game? Or can you join a online server of sorts and play with random people?

Unfortunately, as of now there is no LAN play (I hope it gets added in the future). There is a Server list with public and private (password protected) servers. There are, of course, two people per server, so the public list is usually empty save for one or two that havent been joined yet, and you can easily host simply by hitting "Create Server" and naming it, and you usually get joined within a few seconds. If you want to play with a friend, create a server under private and tell them the password. Hope that helps :)
