Which Zwei game to play first?
Does it matter which order I play these games in?

Not with this series. But just so you know, the main characters from the first game (2 of them) do appear in the second one and you can talk to them to get some minor references about their adventures from the first game.

No that's the first. First has sprites, second has 3D models for characters.

They're probably confused by the Steam release dates, but yeah Zwei Ilvard came out 8 years after Zwei Arges in Japan. And Zwei Ilvard is known as Zwei 2 in Japan.

Well, to answer TC's question and for anyone curious... I'd say this one (Arges Adventure). The 2nd game is pretty much better in every way (not counting graphical preference). This first game's a bit wonky in terms of mechanics, hit detection, combat balance, etc. It's still a fun and enjoyable game though.

If you're only going to play 1 game in the series though, then I would recommend the 2nd one. The first game's a light-hearted adventure with a charming cast nice music and a lot of adorable stuff. The 2nd game's also light-hearted, but the story does get serious and the characters are actually emotionally involved. On top of that the mechanics are just better and more consistent. No need to worry about missing out about the story, they're pretty much self-contained. The main characters from the first game do have a minor role as side characters in this 2nd game though (but again, playing the first is not essential).

I've yet to play Nayuta which mainly seems to be a spiritual successor to these games in terms of gameplay, but has no story relation to them (and is implied to take place in Falcom's Trails universe from what I understand). Still waiting on a good deal for that one, with the 20% off deals it's been getting it's just a little bit over what I'd be willing to pay for it.

Nayuta is a spiritual successor indeed but it takes place in its own self-contained universe. It's always possible to bind stories together but it wouldn't make much sense.
