It's part of a mod which will be called Space Age
It is currently being made by the developers of Factorio.
It will be included in the expansion pack (a DLC) called Factorio: Space Age.
Release date unknown, but the community at large is predicting Sept. or Oct. for the most part.
Due to the way the game doesn't attack enemies that are calculated to be taking enough damage before death. IE during the time the rocket is flying towards a biter, that biter will not be attacked by anything else, letting it eat your walls until the rocket hits and kills it.
You end up taking a lot of extra damage due to this mechanic. And the Gif shown here has it as evidence that they didn't fix this issue. The biters stop being attacked by the lasers and would have eaten the wall if not for editor mode/no damage mode.
The spitters even get shots off. That entire defence line would die after a few attacks.
Also, because the rockets arc 360 degrees when travelling towards a biter, you cannot use anything other then normal rockets because you will destroy your own base with friendly fire.
Rocket turrets are good on paper but they need large range and well, need to not count towards the damage an enemy has taken so other turrets can still shoot.
To be honest, they made sense in earlier versions of the game because the final launch would make enemies send a huge wave towards you that you need to defend for your victory.
In the current version of the game, this doesn't happen anymore. Making the biters kinda pointless. Vanilla biters especially are so weak that you don't even need to build a wall around your base and just kill the nests before your pollution cloud hits them means you never have waves all game. (even in death world map presets once you get flame up its just an afk wait till you win the map, as clearing nests is just a boring chore)
There's a whole combat tree that really doesn't need to exist unless you actively make the game harder with mods. Outside of that, the game is better if you turn biters off.
Once you hit Green biters it kinda gets boring afterwards.
maybe even a "boss" enemy?
