How to setup a 'overflow' chest?
I'm using drones to deliver items to me. Let's say I want to have 400 iron plates and have none. Drones start flying but then I pick up 500 plates. Now drones are left 'in air' with plates carried. I have no place that accepts plates so they stay hovering in air (and you get the 'message' about not enough storage space available).
Now, I want to have a setup where I would have a single chest to which all those drones could deliver this 'overflow' and later be able to pick it up from there to deliver to me.
I'm not able to figure out how to set it up :( If I use a storage chest they dump everything there. If I use a buffer chest they don't use it and if I use a requester chest I'd have to setup every single item in the game for the chest to accept them...

Storage chest have that role, they accept any items that need to be deposited somewhere but don't have a request.

Just be careful if you use active provider chests because those will happily fill up storage chests as well.

Yeah, this is because the source chests you are using are the purple "Active Provider" chests. Change all of them to red "Passive Provider" chests. The ONLY difference between these two chests is that purple "Active" chests will constantly try to dump their contents into any yellow "Storage" in addition to all other sources. Pay attention to what each chest says they supply.

Purple "Active" chests are rarely used. They have a few edge-case uses where you want the chest to always be emptied as soon as possible. I've used it in a few places where I was mining out a deposit that I wanted to build under. I wanted the ores moved so that the miners could keep digging without pausing from full storage.

I'm using buffer chests rather than provider chests as 'source' containers.
And what I meant with the Storage chest issue is that if I have a Requester chest and Storage chest the drones will drop items randomly in either (rather than prioritising Requester chest over Storage chest).

Oh, it will prioritize the requester chest, but only if there are pending requests for that item by that chest.

The wiki has a lot of informations about how the logistics network works, including the priorities:
https://wiki.factorio.com/Logistic_network#Priorities_of_robots

If you want those items to "go back" to the more active part of the network, you can always have a passive provider chest next to the storage chest and an inserter moving things into it (you might want to be cautious about this since storage chests tend to fill with wood and stone from removing rocks, cliffs and forests with constrution robots).
