Extract from furnaces?
Am I being a bit dumb here? When a furnace has completed it's job, e.g iron plates, do I have to continually remove them manually? Is there a way, for example to have them spew out onto a conveyor belt so that they can then be moved into another builder?

Maybe later with more technology? Right now I have to manually take the items and put them into the assembler or wherever they're needed.

You can use inserters to pull out items from machines. Not only furnaces, but also assemblers, chemical plants. Inserters can put and pull items into almost everything, including turrets, chests, train wagons.

Ahh, so I was being dumb then, considering that's available from the start :)

So let's say there's an inserter putting in coal, where does the other inserter go? I remember from the start tutorial that the furnaces output at the back, but I've tried putting a chest there and it doesn't fill. I can't see an arrow or anything showing the output point.

Press the alt key to see the direction the inserter works in. You may have to turn on the option in the menu.

It doesn't matter where you place it, as long ast it is adjacent and in the right direction. You could for example pull it out and place it on the same belt as the base resources came from, though that isn't recommended.

inserters can be placed at any orientation. It does not have to be the back of the furnace.

Only machines which display an arrow in the ALT view can move items into chests (the furnace can't move items on its own).

You can insert coal and ores into the furnace at 8 points and extract at any of the remaining 7 spots with an inserter.
