Possible causes are:

1) water not getting from lake to boiler
2) boilers lacking fuel
3) water not getting from boiler to steam engine
4) electricity pole not positioned correctly to next to steam engine
5) electricity pole not positioned correctly next to powered item
6) break in electricity poles between steam engine and powered item (line break)

I sense from your post you already understand this, but you must have something that uses power connected to the steam engines to get them working.

nvm i got it to work but it is not doing well its only about a quarter of the avaliable power

You can plop down some radars to increase power demand, which will cause the steam engines to produce more power (and thus push up the power demand / maximum power ratio). Steam engines will only produce the amount of power you are actually using.

Are you hovering mouse over an electricity pole to get your electricity consumption/production report? If so what does it say? Note your steam engines will only produce as much juice as they need. If you just connected one itenm to the network then the production bar should read a fraction of power used out of so much total available

One steam engine is not a lot really. I usually do 14 boilers and 10 steam engines to start. That does for quite a while, then I double down to 28/20.

That would explain the issue for me, because of a heckton of solar panels making no need for the steam engines producing power for me.

Old thread, but if anyone just got the game and googled "mai ♥♥♥♥♥♥ no work" and found this thread like I did, I hope this helps you: there's a pass-through port and a steam port on your boiler...

There is also a pinned thread at the top of the general forum that explains - surprisingly patiently I think - why you are not getting power from steam engines.

I do think the "new players and game help" sub forum ought to have a copy too.

If someone's still looking for help, my problem was solved when I noticed that there was water in the pipes that were supposed to be transporting steam. Replacing these pipes solved the problem.

So basically my problem was:

Congrats on the Necro buddy, especially given that steam engines changed between when this thread was made and now, back then water did need to go into the engines rather than steam which didn't exist.
