Don't think it's the best it can be though.
It's only natural, earlier in the game you don't have access to steal and electric furnaces, so even if you have lots of iron ore and a huge smelting area, it's pretty challenging to have enough throughput to keep an full automated belt setup with underground and splitters and still have enough to go to other parts of your factory.
Personally, I just automate the yellow belt earlier in the game and limit production to 500 using a chest. That's more than enough until I can get a better iron/copper throughput by expanding my ore production, and upgrading to electric furnaces.
By the way, do you limit your production with chests so the belts don't use all the iron? There's no need to fill an iron/steel chest with thousands of belts/underground/splitters. Not early in the game at least...
