Iron Gear Wheel auto production

New player here...

Ive been trying to insert iron plates into an Assembling Machine 1, in order to construct iron gear wheels, but after the first couple of plates, the inserter simply stops.

Ive tried the stable built and the beta-branch, no success...

Please help -.-

This is intended behaviour to stop one machine hogging an entire belt of material. As long as the product is being used or removed the machine will recieve additional iron plates as needed.

Usually, yes.
But, in this specific case, the Inserter completely stops after the first couple of iron plates, and the Assembling machine does not not produce anything anymore...

If the assembly machine has two or three prodution runs of material in its output slot the inserter will not add any more.

So i need to empty the assembling machine, to keep it running?
And if so, whats the idea behind that?

Yes. Its to prevent overproduction of something that isn't being used. You always need iron plates but not always need explosives for example.

Just put another inserter that takes the gears out of the machine and puts them onto a belt. Then from that belt you feed other machines that need gears (the ones making red science packs, for example)

The idea of making stuff is assembly machines is to take the output out and into a chest or onto a belt. If you don't have an output, it will not keep making stuff just for you (use a chest).

you can also put it directly in an other machine with an inserter
