How to go see multiple root technologies on research UI

I must be missing something, but how can I see the whole research tree instead of only one parent branch at a time?

As far as I know there isn't a way to display the whole tech tree in the tree view on the right, but you can definitely display a lot more by selecting a research that is further down the tech tree.

You use the list on the left when you need to have a look at all of the technologies at once, the ones that are in yellow are the ones you can currently research (all "parents" are researched), followed by the ones you can't get yet in red and finally the ones you already researched in green at the bottom.

Only downside is it's vanilla-only and it doesn't show which ones you've already done, but it's good for seeing what leads to what.

That ... kind of sucks!

Strange though, as I've just come back to this after several months not playing it. I could swear I could see the bigger picture the last time I played. Probably my memory playing tricks on me I guess.
