What to do with wood?
I´m pileing up a lot of wood cutting my way throug nature with railroads.
Is there a better way than rafting wood boxes to store the wood?

Outside of small electric poles and wooden chests it is only used for making basic weapons that you at most will craft once.
If you don't want to just "void" it with a shotgun shot on a full chest of it you could use it as a very inefficient fuel for boilers.

That's kind of why people tend to destroy trees (grenades, shotgun, flame thrower) instead of cutting them.

If you play with mods there are more uses for it, angel even makes wood as a component for the basic recipe of the first circuit, but in vanilla wood really is just an early game resource.

What I do is make a chest to dump it in, with an inserter feeding it onto the fuel belt for the boilers (and later, trains). Use a priority splitter setup to use wood first and then turn to coal. It's half as much energy as coal, but it's basically free. Save the coal for making plastic.

Playing on Vanilla, Wood has almost no use at all and will just pile up unless you just burn it.

If you plan to use Mods it will have more uses and can also be used to make Liquids and other such things.

Wooden power poles are uber cheap (only half a copper plate each!), & fit with a great many typical assembly line designs. By far the best cost vs coverage area of all the power pole types.
They are my go-to power choice & I use them wherever possible (with big poles for long distance & substations for tricky / compact designs). Beaconed ore->steel smelting using small poles ~ example[i.imgur.com]

Otherwise (as already mentioned): setup a priority feed to some of your chemical boilers to burn the excess wood automatically, or you can always place some stacks into a chest + shoot it.

I also like the small poles but for a different reason, it's because you can use them to power 2 machines along with 2 inserters on each side while also leaving a tile worth of space between the machines which is great for being able to walk when you don't have the squeak through mod (but it does mean taking more space so it's not exactly the favoured layout for most people).

@Fel you can power more than that, hehe. Here is a just-for-fun 500 green chips /min design around 1 wooden power pole ~ pic[i.imgur.com].

(You can walk between most buildings in vanilla btw, though chests are still a solid wall.)

Why not get a network going for the use of a wall. Meaning... dump the wood into a chest. Then have the wood delivered to a wall made of requester chest for wood. If biters attack and destroy the chest. The network will replace the chest. Put common attacked zones with more full chests.

That's... interesting. You could also automate production of wooden chests, and make your wall out of several rows of wooden chests with turrets behind. If they get destroyed, construction bots will automatically replace them. They're a lot weaker than the requester chests, but this is a very cheap way to use "trash".

This... I... huh. Wooden walls. interesting.

Exactly, it is energy for free. Splitter can work as merger, with properly set priority, can burn all the wood to save coal for later. Cant understand why somwone would void wood, when you can turn it to electricity.

I fuel all my trains with wood, but the storage is growing. Maybe I should do those walls with wooden chests. I only lately realized that I don't have to clear all the wood ln my base, shift+clicking blueprint only removes the necessary trees.

Ah. But I can't stand having trees in my base. They all must DIE! And feed the boilers.

Keeping trees near your base helps with biters -- in addition to their pollution absorbing power, the bugs have just as much difficulty pathing through a thick forest as you do. That gives more time for your turrets to shoot them before they reach the walls.
