Combat robot automation layout.
I made this http://images.akamai.steamusercontent.com/ugc/101727694605903118/A897A9BC00ECE1C635E21A33EC33BDC02EBC4C65/ but I have no idea if it's any good. It works well enough but if it can be improved please tell me.

It looks pretty good to me. The main question is, are there bottlenecks? Anything being produces faster than it can be consumed? Or anything not being produced fast enough to keep the next step going?

There was a bottleneck due to gears but now that I've setup new machines it's the item I have the most in my entire factory so it's stockpiled in every chest. The destroyer capsules are also filled to the max so it's hard to tell now. I could use other beacons if I find that there's a bottleneck.

A small thing, but will save you on resources -- you only need 1 requester chest for each factory.

Similar belt layout in this base (bottom middle of the screenshot)

Well that can depend on what you're building. Maybe it's not an issue in vanilla, but there's a lot of modded things that can benefit from multiple requesters (or at least multiple inserters on the same requester, if using bobs inserter configuration mod) just because one inserter can't keep up even with maxed stack bonuses.

Yeah, you can use one chest in some assembly machines, but it doesn't always work, so instead of getting the surprise of it not working after I finish building something, I just build with multiple chests in mind.

I've never had problems with having requester chests filled with 4 or more items.

I think I know what your problem could be, usually the inserter inserts what the adjacent machine wants, but if no machine is present, it just picks up the first thing it gets its "hand" on. Maybe when no recipe is selected in the machine the inserter just picks up whatever it can. I'd have to test it out someday.

Sometimes one inserter can't keep up with the demand. If the recipe is 3 items, by the time it finishes filling up the second, the product is done and then it waits because it needs the third.

Ah yes, that makes perfect sense. I only use requester chests for low production recipes, that's why I never experienced this.
